Valverde praises Mourinho’s demanding approach after Real Madrid win

Federico Valverde says Jose Mourinho’s close relationship with Real Madrid’s players, combined with his occasional toughness, is helping the squad respond to the new manager’s methods.

Real Madrid captain Valverde was speaking after his side’s 2-1 friendly victory over Ferencvarosi, their second pre-season match under Mourinho.

“We played well, and we are still working on putting the manager’s ideas into practice. We feel that we are improving all the time,” Valverde said after the game.

“Winning is important even if it is a friendly, because we want to keep achieving victories.”

Mario Rivas and Carlos Espe scored Real Madrid’s goals, while Kenan Kodro replied for the Hungarian side.

The match also featured appearances from Real Madrid’s three new players: Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espe.

Valverde said he had been enjoying the opportunity to work with Mourinho and was trying to take something from the manager every day.

“It is great. I enjoy training with him and I try to learn from him every day,” he said.

“The players are happy, everyone is working well, and as captain I am pleased with what the team is producing.”

Real Madrid drew their first friendly under Mourinho 2-2 with Fiorentina before defeating Ferencvarosi in their second match.

Valverde, who is now carrying the captain’s armband, said the role had brought a significant responsibility but remained a source of pride.

“Being captain is a big responsibility, and it is an honour for me. I always try to give my best on and off the pitch,” he said.

The Uruguay midfielder also described Mourinho’s approach to managing the squad, saying the Portuguese coach’s direct style was designed to bring the best out of the players.

“He is very close to the players and sometimes he is tough, but that is the best way to reach us,” Valverde said.

“I like the way he deals with us, and we are trying to give everything we have to make him happy.”

Valverde also welcomed the arrival of Bernardo Silva, who made his first appearance for the club during the friendly.

“He is a great player. I enjoy playing with him, and he is a major addition to the team,” Valverde said.

The captain added that his priority was to help the squad remain united and ensure his team-mates were in the best possible condition.

“I focus only on my team and my team-mates, and I want everyone to be in the best possible state inside the dressing room,” he said.

The victory over Ferencvarosi gives Mourinho a winning start to his second pre-season fixture in charge of Real Madrid, following the draw with Fiorentina in the opening friendly.
