RS Berkane’s Paul Valère apologises following controversial celebration against Raja Casablanca

RS Berkane forward Paul Valère Bassene has issued a public apology after his goal celebration during his team’s victory over Raja Casablanca sparked controversy among supporters and football observers.

The Senegalese player came under scrutiny following his actions after scoring the winning goal in Wednesday’s match at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, prompting him to address the matter through a statement on social media.

Player Responds to Backlash

In a message shared on his personal Instagram account, Bassene apologised to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, RS Berkane, Raja Casablanca and football fans who were offended by the gesture.

The forward explained that his actions were not intended to disrespect anyone and were instead an emotional reaction in the heat of the moment after scoring a crucial goal.

“I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for my celebration after scoring the goal in the match between RS Berkane and Raja Casablanca, which some considered excessive. I had absolutely no intention of offending anyone with my actions. It was simply an expression, in the heat of the moment, of the fighting spirit that drives us on the pitch, a way of saying that we fight like men, with unwavering commitment and determination, nothing more.”

Accepting Responsibility

Bassene acknowledged that the celebration had been interpreted differently by many supporters and accepted responsibility for the controversy that followed.

The Senegalese attacker stressed that respect remains one of football’s core values and admitted that the excitement of the occasion influenced his behaviour.

“However, I understand that this gesture was misinterpreted, and I take full responsibility for that. Football is first and foremost a sport of respect, and I shouldn’t have let the excitement of the moment get the better of me in that way.”

Commitment to Sportsmanship

The RS Berkane player concluded his statement by reaffirming his commitment to fair play and promising to be more mindful of his conduct in future matches.
