Valencia are working behind the scenes on a potential summer move for Ghana international Jerome Opoku as the Spanish club looks to strengthen its defence ahead of next season.
With the winter transfer window still open, the La Liga side have already made contact with Istanbul Basaksehir to express their interest in the 27-year-old defender.
Sources close to the player indicate that initial discussions have taken place as Valencia assess their options in a challenging campaign that has left them hovering near the bottom of the table.
Valencia, who currently sit 17th in La Liga, are understood to be willing to meet Istanbul Basaksehir’s valuation of around €8m in order to secure Opoku’s services.
The club’s hierarchy is reportedly considering a four-year contract, with negotiations also touching on a proposed annual salary in the region of €2.75m.
Opoku joined the Turkish Super Lig side in June 2024 and remains under contract until June 2027.
Despite his relatively recent arrival in Turkey, his performances have drawn attention beyond the domestic league, with his market value estimated at €5m.
Valencia’s interest underlines the growing demand for the defender, who has established himself as a regular figure at club level and in Ghana’s national setup.
The Spanish club’s pursuit comes amid wider interest in Opoku from elsewhere in Europe.
It has recently emerged that Premier League sides Fulham and Nottingham Forest are also monitoring the defender’s situation, potentially setting the stage for a competitive race should Basaksehir decide to sell.
For Valencia, the move is seen as part of a broader strategy to reinforce a back line that has struggled for consistency this season.
While no formal bid has yet been confirmed, the club’s early approach suggests a desire to move quickly once the summer window opens.
Attention will briefly return to domestic matters as Valencia prepare for their 21st La Liga fixture against Espanyol.
However, behind the scenes, recruitment planning continues, with Opoku’s name firmly on the club’s shortlist as they seek to stabilise their squad and improve results in the seasons ahead.
