Valencia in talks with Javier Aguirre over return to La Liga

Valencia are in negotiations with Javier Aguirre as they step up plans to appoint the Mexican as their next manager and successor to Carlos Corberan.

The club has been in contact with Aguirre’s representatives for several days, according to Spanish newspaper Marca, following an initial round of discussions with a number of coaches.

A decisive meeting or conversation between Valencia and Aguirre is expected on Friday, with both parties keen to reach an agreement. However, some sporting and contractual issues still need to be resolved before a deal can be completed.

The negotiations are being conducted in strict confidence. Valencia and the representatives of the former Egypt manager have not commented publicly on the discussions or their progress.

Valencia’s hierarchy believe Aguirre has the experience and personality required for the club’s current situation, while his knowledge of Spanish football is also viewed as an important advantage.

The 67-year-old has previously managed Osasuna, Atletico de Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Real Mallorca. He has been without a club since his spell in charge of Mexico ended.

Aguirre is understood to be very interested in returning to coaching in Spain, and financial considerations do not appear to be preventing the negotiations from moving forward.

The proposed agreement would allow him to take charge for the remainder of the current season, with the possibility of extending the contract for a further campaign if specific targets are met. The main objective would be to ensure Valencia avoid relegation.

Aguirre has received several offers in recent months but had continued to favour a return to Spanish football.

Valencia are not rushing to finalise the appointment. Oscar Sanchez will take charge of the team for their match against Real Sociedad, while the club intends to use the three-week international break to bring in the new manager and begin work with the squad at Paterna.
