Valencia in advanced talks with Javier Aguirre to replace Carlos Corberan

Valencia are holding confidential negotiations with Javier Aguirre over becoming their new head coach, with the former Egypt manager emerging as the leading candidate to replace Carlos Corberan.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, talks between Valencia and Aguirre’s representatives began several days ago after the club made initial contact with a number of coaches. A decisive meeting or conversation is expected on Friday, which could pave the way for a final agreement, with both parties keen to complete the move.

The negotiations are being conducted in complete secrecy. Valencia and Aguirre’s representatives have not commented on the discussions, particularly because several sporting and contractual details still need to be settled.

Valencia believe the 67-year-old has the experience and character required for the club’s current situation, as well as extensive knowledge of Spanish football. Aguirre has previously managed Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Real Mallorca.

Aguirre is understood to be enthusiastic about returning to coaching in Spain, while financial issues are not considered an obstacle to the negotiations. The Mexican is seeking an agreement that would allow him to complete the current season, with the possibility of extending his contract for another campaign if certain targets are met.

The principal objective would be to keep Valencia in La Liga.

Aguirre has been without a club since his time in charge of the Mexico national team ended. He has received several offers during the past few months but has continued to favour a return to Spanish football.

Valencia are not rushing to conclude the deal. Oscar Sanchez is due to take charge of the team for their match against Real Sociedad, while the club plans to use the three-week international break to bring in a new manager.

The intention would be for Aguirre to arrive at Paterna during that period and begin working with the squad.
