Valencia appoint Javier Aguirre as head coach after Carlos Corberan exit

Valencia have appointed Mexican coach Javier Aguirre as their new manager after dismissing Carlos Corberan because of the team’s poor start to the La Liga season.

Aguirre has signed a contract running until the end of the season, with the agreement including an option to extend his stay for a further campaign if both parties consent.

Corberan left the club after managing Valencia in 72 official matches since taking charge in December 2024. During that period, he recorded 28 victories, 18 draws and 26 defeats.

Valencia are 19th in La Liga with four points from their opening six matches. Their next fixture after the international break will be against Racing on 11 October.

The club had identified Aguirre as the leading candidate for the position, ahead of Ernesto Valverde, who declined the opportunity to take up a coaching role this season.

The appointment gives Aguirre his seventh experience of managing in La Liga. His previous clubs in the competition are Atletico Madrid, Osasuna, Espanyol, Real Zaragoza, Leganes and Real Mallorca.

Aguirre’s most recent role was as manager of the Mexico national team. He guided Mexico to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated by England.

The Mexican Football Federation subsequently appointed Rafael Marquez as Mexico’s manager, replacing Aguirre, who had previously managed the Egypt national team.

Aguirre now returns to club management in Spain with Valencia facing an immediate challenge to improve their league position. His first match with the team will come after the international break, when they meet Racing on 11 October.
