Uzbekistan stuns Egypt ahead of Africa Cup of Nations
Egypt’s national football team endured a shocking 2-0 defeat against Uzbekistan in the semifinal of the Al Ain International Tournament in the UAE, casting doubt over their preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Both goals were scored by Uzbekistan’s standout player, Oston Urunov, whose speed and composure broke through Egypt’s defense early and set the tone for a tough night.
Under head coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt opted for a new tactical approach and gave several inexperienced players a chance, but the experiment backfired. Defensive mistakes cost the team dearly, allowing Uzbekistan to control the match and create repeated dangerous chances.
Despite some second-half efforts from Egypt, including close shots and attempts from Mohamed Salah and Ahmed Zizo Mostafa, the Uzbek goalkeeper and defenders kept their lead intact. Zizo left the game with a minor injury, increasing worries for Egypt’s squad fitness.
Post-match tensions surfaced as Egyptian player Mahmoud Zalaka ended up in a brief altercation, which was quickly resolved.
Egypt’s next test is against Cape Verde to decide third place in the tournament, while Uzbekistan clashes with Iran for the championship. The setback highlights Egypt’s urgent need to regroup before their continental challenge begins.
