USM Alger eyes strong start in CAF Cup after domestic setback

USM Alger is set to return to continental competition this Wednesday as they host Orapa United in the opening match of the CAF Cup group stage. The Red and Black, fresh off their first defeat in the domestic league against Chabab in Constantine, are determined to bounce back with a victory in Algiers.

The match, set to take place at the iconic July 5 stadium, marks a fresh start for the team, who are keen to put the disappointment of their recent league loss behind them.

In preparation for the fixture, head coach Nabil Maâloul has emphasized the importance of securing a strong start in the CAF Cup.

Speaking to his players at a team meeting on Saturday, Maâloul expressed his frustration over the lack of effectiveness in their recent league outing and urged them to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd.

We need to be more present in duels and more efficient.

The Tunisian coach has made it clear that the team’s primary goal is to dominate at home and secure at least one away victory to top the group.

Despite their opponents, Orapa United, being relatively unknown to the Algiers side, Maâloul remains confident that his team’s experience and determination will see them through.

However, the squad will face some challenges, as they will again be without key players Ghiles Guenaoui and Lyès Chetti, and Mondeko, although recovered from injury, is not yet match-ready.
