USM Alger beat Mamelodi Sundowns to win second CAF Super Cup

USM Alger claimed the CAF Super Cup with a 3-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday.

The Algerian side were clinical despite Mamelodi Sundowns enjoying greater control of possession, securing a second continental title after their 2023 triumph against Al Ahly.

USM Alger made a fast start and took the lead in the fourth minute. Ahmed Khaldi advanced down the left before cutting the ball back for Zakaria Draoui, who finished the move to put the Rouge et Noir ahead.

Mamelodi Sundowns responded by taking control of the match and were awarded a penalty following a VAR intervention. Iqraam Rayners converted from the spot in the 25th minute to level the score.

USM Alger restored their advantage before half-time in a chaotic sequence from a corner. The ball came back off the post before Saadi Radouani reacted quickest to head home in the 36th minute.

The match was then held up for more than 30 minutes because of heavy rain. When play resumed for the second half, USM Alger continued to pose the greater threat in front of goal.

Ahmed Khaldi, who had created the opening goal, added a third goal shortly after the restart. From the edge of the penalty area, the Algerian forward curled a precise effort into the corner to make it 3-1.

Mamelodi Sundowns were unable to find a way back into the contest as USM Alger defended their lead until the final whistle.

The victory gives USM Alger their second CAF Super Cup, following their success against Al Ahly in 2023. The Algerian club will also receive prize money of 500,000 dollars, while Mamelodi Sundowns will be awarded 250,000 dollars.
