Kuwait is mourning the loss of former footballer Fahad Al-Mejmed, who died at the age of 33 while serving as a security officer, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior of Kuwait.

Al-Mejmed passed away on March 6 while on duty with Kuwait’s General Directorate of Land Border Security, where he served with the rank of major.

Authorities confirmed that he and Abdullah Emad Al‑Sharrah, a lieutenant colonel, were killed at dawn while carrying out national security responsibilities. The ministry described both men as “martyrs of duty” in recognition of their service.

The tragedy comes amid heightened military tension across the Gulf following the escalation triggered by the US–Israel strikes on Iran and the broader conflict that followed. In response to the volatile regional situation, Kuwait had stepped up security measures, particularly along its land borders.

Although authorities have not released full details surrounding the incident, officials confirmed that the two officers were killed while performing national security duties as part of ongoing operations.

Before dedicating himself fully to military service, Al-Mejmed had built a respected career in Kuwaiti football. The central defender began his professional journey with Al‑Qadsia SC, one of the most decorated clubs in the country, before moving on to represent Kazma SC and later Al‑Salmiya SC.

During his time at Al-Salmiya, particularly from 2019 onward, he emerged as a key figure in the club’s defense and eventually captained the side for several seasons. His leadership qualities and commitment on the pitch earned him admiration from teammates and supporters alike.

Al-Mejmed retired from professional football only a few months before his death. He made the announcement during a match between Al-Salmiya SC and Al‑Arabi SC, choosing to step away from the game in order to focus entirely on his military career.

Following the news of his death, Al-Salmiya SC issued a heartfelt message expressing grief over the passing of their former captain.

“With great sadness and sorrow, the president, board members, and all affiliates of Al-Salmiya Club extend their sincere condolences to the families of the two martyrs and to the Kuwaiti people following the death of Major Fahad Abdulaziz Al-Majmad, a player of Al-Salmiya Club, and Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Emad Al-Sharrah, who were martyred while performing their national duty.”

Tributes also poured in from Al‑Arabi SC, Al‑Qadsia SC and the Kuwait Football Association as the Kuwaiti football community paid homage to a player remembered for both his leadership on the field and his dedication to serving his country.
