Urs Fischer hopeful of Danny da Costa return for final Bundesliga match

Mainz coach Urs Fischer is cautiously optimistic that Danny da Costa could feature on the final matchday despite the defender’s recent head knock.

The versatile full-back was forced off after around 15 minutes in Sunday’s 3–1 defeat to Union Berlin after taking a blow to the head in a challenge.

Speaking before the clash with Heidenheim, Fischer offered a measured update, explaining that the situation for the weekend is not fully resolved but stressing that “nothing happened” and that da Costa is doing well under the circumstances.

During the week, the 32-year-old largely avoided physical contact, but he is expected to rejoin full team training on Friday. Once he can go into tackles again, the coaching and medical staff will decide whether he is ready to start.

There is already clarity about his longer-term future. Mainz confirmed that an appearance-based clause has triggered an automatic contract extension until 2027. Fischer highlighted da Costa’s importance not only on the pitch but also in the dressing room, describing him as an experienced leader who keeps things in order and brings calm professionalism to the team, making his continued presence a big plus for the club.
