Equatorial Guinea’s head of state has decided to reward the players of the national football team following their impressive victory over Ivory Coast, the host team, with a resounding 4-0 scoreline in the third and final match of the group stage.
Guinea Equatorial Advances to Round of 16 Alongside Nigeria
The Guinean team secured their spot in the Round of 16 as leaders of Group 1 with 7 points, accompanied by Nigeria in second place with the same point tally.
Meanwhile, Ivory Coast settled in third place with 3 points, and Guinea-Bissau occupies the bottom of the group with no points.
The official television channel of Equatorial Guinea confirmed that President Teodoro Obiang Nguema has awarded a €1 million bonus to the players, in addition to the coaching staff, following their historic 4-0 triumph over the Elephants.
The President also declared Tuesday a fully paid national holiday.
In the Round of 16, Equatorial Guinea will face the team finishing third in either Group 3 or 4.
