Nigeria showed impressive resilience on Saturday night, coming from behind to beat Morocco 3-2 in the finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Atlas Lionesses made a strong start in the final, taking the lead just 13 minutes through a brilliant long-range strike from captain Ghizlane Chebbak.

Ten minutes later, Morocco doubled their advantage when Sanaa Massoudy found the back of the net after a well-placed assist from Ibtissam Jraidi.

With a 2-0 lead heading into halftime, Morocco looked poised to secure their first-ever WAFCON title. But Nigeria had other plans.

In a spirited second-half performance, the Super Falcons roared back. Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back in the 64th minute before Folashade Ljamilusi levelled the score just seven minutes later.

With momentum on their side, Nigeria completed the dramatic turnaround when substitute Jennifer Echegini netted the winner late in the game.

The victory secured Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and dashed Morocco’s dreams of lifting the trophy on home soil.

The Black Queens of Ghana finished with a bronze medal at the tournament while defending champions South Africa settled for fourth place.
