Calvin Bassey’s future at Fulham is uncertain after the Nigerian defender was relegated to the bench following his return from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Having started 15 of the 16 matches he featured in earlier this season, Bassey has played only four minutes since coming back from international duty.
Fulham manager Marco Silva has opted instead for Jorge Cuenca, who has taken advantage of his opportunity in the first team.
Explaining his decision, Silva said: “Cuenca seized his opportunity and demonstrated his qualities.
I am the first to acknowledge Calvin’s impact at the club; he is an exceptional central defender.
He has enormous potential and can still improve. It’s a competition.”
The manager’s comments underline the competitive nature of Fulham’s defensive options rather than signalling a loss of confidence in Bassey.
However, the shift in selection has raised questions about the player’s role in the squad for the remainder of the campaign.
Bassey had established himself as a regular starter prior to the Africa Cup of Nations, offering consistency at the heart of Fulham’s defence.
His absence during the tournament appears to have opened the door for Cuenca, who has since retained his place.
With just one year remaining on his contract, the 24-year-old defender could face a significant decision in the coming months.
The summer transfer window may present an opportunity for a new challenge should his situation at Craven Cottage remain unchanged.
For now, Bassey must compete to regain his starting position in what Silva has described as a healthy internal battle.
The Nigerian international’s response in training and any opportunities he receives on the pitch could prove decisive for both his short-term prospects and his long-term future at Fulham.
