Uganda faces uncertainty over the availability of star striker Muhammad Shaban ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Congo. Shaban, who missed the Cranes’ opening match against South Africa, is doubtful for Monday’s game due to an injury sustained just before the first round of qualifiers.
Shaban’s injury, which occurred during the final 15 minutes of training prior to the 0-0 draw with South Africa, has cast a shadow over Uganda’s preparations.
Speaking during a press conference on Sunday, Cranes head coach Paul Put remained cautious about the striker’s participation in the upcoming fixture, leaving fans anxious over his potential absence.
“Shaban got injured in the last 15 minutes of our final training session before the South Africa match.
We will assess how he responds during today’s training, and hopefully, he will be available for tomorrow’s game,” Put said, underlining that while the squad is mostly fit, Shaban’s involvement remains in question.
Muhammad Shaban, a highly regarded figure in Ugandan football, plays a pivotal role as the team’s center forward.
His potential absence could be a significant blow for Uganda, who are looking to secure a vital win on home soil.
Shaban’s pace, goal-scoring ability, and experience bring an added dimension to the Cranes’ attack, making him a crucial component of their AFCON campaign.
Despite his uncertain status, coach Paul Put expressed confidence in his overall squad depth, hinting that he has other options at his disposal should Shaban be unable to play.
“We have an almost full squad, and while we hope Shaban will be fit, we have players who are ready to step up if needed,” Put said.
As Uganda prepares to host Congo in this decisive Group B encounter, Paul Put also sounded a note of caution regarding their opponents.
Congo, known for their skilled roster, features players from some of the top leagues in Europe and Africa.
The Red Devils, as they are known, represent a stern test for Uganda’s ambitions in the CAN 2025 qualifiers.
“Congo is a strong team with a lot of quality players, many of whom play in major leagues around the world,” Put acknowledged.
“We cannot afford to underestimate them. Our goal is to secure maximum points, but we have to be prepared for a tough match.”
Congo, who have shown resilience and strength in recent performances, will be eager to capitalize on any weaknesses within Uganda’s lineup, particularly if Shaban is unable to recover in time.
The Cranes, therefore, will need to bring their best game to ensure victory and boost their chances of qualifying for the prestigious tournament in Morocco.
Uganda’s journey to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is still in its early stages, and each point gained is crucial for qualification.
Following the goalless draw against South Africa, the Cranes are keen to register their first victory of the campaign.
With home advantage on their side and the passionate support of their fans, Uganda will be looking to assert their dominance in the group and keep their AFCON dreams alive.
The second matchday of the qualifiers promises to be a challenging test for Paul Put’s squad, but the Cranes remain optimistic about their chances.
While the uncertainty surrounding Muhammad Shaban lingers, the team is prepared to adapt and push forward with a winning mindset.
As Uganda welcomes Congo to the Mandela National Stadium on Monday, the stakes are high.
With or without Shaban, Uganda must remain focused on securing a victory and taking a significant step towards qualification for AFCON 2025.
