Authorities in Uganda have launched an investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who reportedly fell from a shopping mall in the capital, Kampala.
The 29-year-old striker was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital after allegedly falling from the third-floor balcony of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade. Lawal had visited the location to see a Tanzanian friend.
According to reports, the friend, identified as Omary Naima, had left him in her room—part of the mall complex—preparing tea before the tragic incident occurred.
Lawal, who played for Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club, was remembered by his team as a cherished member of the squad.
“Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous”.
“We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest,” his former team in Nigeria, Nasarawa United, said.
Since joining Vipers in July 2022, Lawal had built a strong reputation, following a two-year stint with Rwandan club AS Kigali.
His former Nigerian team, Nasarawa United, also mourned his passing, stating, “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest.”
Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza added, “It’s hard to take in that you’re no more Lawal A kind, talented, jolly, and loving person you have been. You will forever be missed, bro.”
The circumstances of his death remain unclear, with conflicting reports emerging. Some initial media reports suggested he had died in a motorcycle accident.
Ugandan police are actively investigating, reviewing CCTV footage, and questioning witnesses to determine the exact sequence of events.
Authorities have recovered some of Lawal’s personal belongings, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and a training kit.
“Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the police added.
