Uganda to honour Khalid Aucho in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

Khalid Aucho is set to receive an official farewell from Uganda after being included in Paul Put’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying double-header against Botswana.

The 33-year-old midfielder announced his retirement from international football on 12 October, but his inclusion in the 30-man squad will allow him to say goodbye to the Cranes’ supporters at the Hoima City Stadium on 14 November.

Uganda manager Paul Put said he had contacted the former captain to discuss arranging a formal send-off.

“For a player as well known as Khalid, he deserves an organised farewell,” Put said while presenting his squad.

The plans will give Aucho the opportunity to reunite with his team-mates and acknowledge the supporters who have followed his international career. According to reports in the Ugandan press, he accepted the proposal.

Aucho made his Uganda debut on 30 November 2013 and went on to win 77 international caps during a 13-year career with the Cranes. He represented his country at three Africa Cup of Nations finals.

His time with the national team included Uganda’s return to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, ending a 39-year absence from the tournament.

A former captain and influential presence in the dressing room, Aucho will leave international football having played a significant role for his country. The home fixture in Hoima on 14 November will provide supporters with the chance to recognise his contribution.

Uganda will then face Botswana in the return match on 17 November.
