Uganda name revamped squad with key returns for Botswana and Algeria World Cup qualifiers

Uganda have announced a refreshed 26-man squad for their final two matches in the 2026 World Cup African qualifiers, with two major returns boosting their campaign hopes.

Head coach Paul Put has introduced several changes as the Cranes prepare for decisive fixtures against Botswana on October 9 and Algeria on October 14.

Uganda remain in contention for qualification, sitting level on 15 points with Mozambique, while Algeria lead the group with 19 points.

Bobosi Byaruhanga returns to the national team after missing the September camp. The Oakland Roots midfielder will strengthen Uganda’s central line.

Allan Oyirwoth also re-joins the squad after impressing for New England Revolution. Their inclusion adds depth and experience to the midfield.

While new names return, some familiar faces miss out. Goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, defenders Elvis Bwomono and John Paul Dembe, and midfielders Karim Watambala and Patrick Jonah Kakande all drop out.

These changes reflect Put’s desire to refine his team for the crucial fixtures.

The squad features key figures such as Allan Okello, Travis Mutyaba, Kenneth Semakula, and Rogers Mato, who remain integral to Uganda’s qualification hopes.

Put aims to build a balanced side capable of challenging group leaders Algeria and overcoming Botswana in the penultimate clash.

Uganda’s goalkeeping options include Denis Onyango, Salim Omar Magoola, and Nafian Alionzi. The defence features Elio Capradossi, Toby Sibbick, and Jordan Obita, while Byaruhanga and Semakula anchor the midfield. The attack is led by Okello, Mpande, and Mutyaba.

Uganda’s path to qualification depends on results in these two games. Victories over Botswana and Algeria could secure their place at the 2026 World Cup, marking a historic achievement for Ugandan football.
