Uganda defender Bevis Mugabi weighs future amid contract uncertainty at Motherwell

Highly regarded Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi is facing a crucial decision regarding his future as his contract with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell nears its conclusion at the end of the current season.

Having spent five seasons with Motherwell, Mugabi’s contract is set to expire on May 31, 2024, leaving the towering defender at a crossroads in his career.

In an exclusive interview with Africafoot, Mugabi remained tight-lipped about his plans, emphasizing his focus on finishing the season strongly with his current club.

“I’m just focused on finishing the season strong with the team. After that, we will see what happens next. I am happy at Motherwell,” Mugabi stated, keeping his options open regarding his future endeavors.

Despite seeing limited playing time in recent matches, Mugabi has been an integral part of Stuart Kettlewell’s squad, featuring in 30 Scottish Premier League games this season.

This tally marks a significant increase from his appearances in the previous season, showcasing his enduring importance to the team.

Since his arrival at Motherwell in the 2019/20 season, the 29-year-old defender has made an impressive 107 league appearances, totaling 123 appearances across all competitions for the Steelmen.

Prior to his stint at Motherwell, Mugabi plied his trade with English League Two sides Yeovil and Southampton’s U21 team, further enhancing his experience and skill set.

Internationally, Mugabi has represented the Ugandan national team with distinction, earning 20 caps since his debut in 2017.

Notably, he assumed the role of captain during the March 2024 international friendlies against Comoros and Ghana, demonstrating his leadership qualities on the field.
