Uganda cruise past DR Congo in friendly
Uganda secured a convincing 2-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first leg of their two-match international friendly series during the October international break.
The Cranes produced a disciplined and commanding display at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, with the match played behind closed doors, as they capitalised on defensive errors from the Leopards to claim a comfortable victory.
Uganda made a fast start and took the lead after just seven minutes. A misplaced clearance from DR Congo goalkeeper Dimitri presented James Bogere with an opportunity, and the Uganda forward made no mistake as he fired the Cranes into a 1-0 lead.
The early setback forced DR Congo to respond, with the Leopards attempting to establish greater control of possession and create opportunities in the final third. However, Uganda remained organised defensively and restricted their opponents from finding a way through.
Despite their efforts, DR Congo could not find an equaliser before the interval, with Uganda maintaining their advantage as the two sides headed into the dressing room.
The Cranes resumed the second half with the same intensity and quickly extended their lead. Kelvin Boateng struck in the 49th minute to double Uganda’s advantage and put the East African side firmly in control at 2-0.
The second goal increased the pressure on DR Congo, who needed a response to get themselves back into the contest. The Leopards pushed forward in search of a breakthrough but struggled to penetrate Uganda’s defence.
Uganda, meanwhile, remained compact and managed the remainder of the game effectively, preventing DR Congo from reducing the deficit.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for the Cranes, giving them a strong advantage ahead of the second meeting.
The two countries will face each other again in the return leg on Monday, October 5, when DR Congo will have the opportunity to respond and attempt to level the friendly series.
