Uganda and Gambia share spoils in competitive friendly

Uganda and Gambia played out a 1-1 draw on Monday in a closely contested international friendly held as part of the June FIFA break.

The Cranes took the lead midway through the first half, with Roger Mota finding the back of the net in the 25th minute.

Mota’s opener came after a sustained spell of pressure from Uganda, who looked the sharper of the two sides in the early exchanges.

However, Gambia responded just before the interval.

In the 44th minute, Musa Jatta seized on a defensive lapse to bring the Scorpions level.

His well-timed strike ensured that the teams went into the dressing rooms tied at one goal apiece.

Both sides showed attacking intent in the second half, with opportunities falling at either end.

Uganda looked to press high and reclaim the lead, while Gambia remained dangerous on the counter.

Despite the tempo rising as the match wore on, neither team was able to find a decisive breakthrough.

The match, although a friendly, was played with intensity and featured several moments of individual brilliance and coordinated team play.

It served as a valuable opportunity for both coaches to assess their squads and experiment with tactical setups ahead of competitive fixtures later in the year.

Uganda, under the guidance of their technical staff, used the game to test combinations in midfield and attack, while Gambia focused on solidifying their defensive structure and transitioning quickly into offence.

The result was ultimately fair, with both nations having their moments and neither able to fully assert dominance.

For the fans, the encounter offered a glimpse of promising talent on both sides and a reminder of the competitive spirit that continues to grow in African football.

With the international window continuing, both Uganda and Gambia are expected to review their performances and regroup as they prepare for upcoming qualifiers and tournaments that will shape their footballing ambitions in the months ahead.
