With less than a month remaining before the start of the Total U17 Africa Cup of Nations, Tanzania 2019, Uganda has finally resolved one of its major preparations by appointing a head coach for its national U17 team. On Wednesday, the Uganda Football Federation (FUFA) officially announced the appointment of Paa Kwesi Samuel Fabian as the new manager of the Cubs, ending weeks of anticipation and uncertainty.
The Ghanaian tactician has signed a one-year contract with FUFA, which includes an option for an additional year depending on performance and mutual agreement. Fabian brings with him significant experience at youth and senior levels, particularly in African football. He is best known for his work with Ghana’s U17 national team, which he led during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and later at the FIFA U17 World Cup held in India. His exposure to top-level youth competitions is expected to be a valuable asset as Uganda prepares to compete against some of the continent’s strongest teams.
In addition to his international experience, Paa Kwesi Fabian has also coached several prominent clubs in Ghana, including Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, and Inter Allies. His background with these traditional powerhouses has earned him a reputation as a disciplined coach with a strong emphasis on tactical organization, youth development, and competitive mentality—qualities FUFA hopes will benefit the Cubs in Tanzania.
With his appointment now confirmed, Fabian will immediately begin preparations for the upcoming tournament. Uganda is scheduled to hold a training camp in South Africa as part of its final build-up to the competition. This camp will be crucial for assessing players, implementing tactical systems, and building team cohesion ahead of the continental challenge. Time is limited, but the federation believes Fabian’s experience will allow him to adapt quickly and get the squad ready in time.
Alongside the head coach, FUFA also unveiled the rest of the technical staff who will support the Cubs during their AFCON campaign. Nelly Magera Jackson has been appointed as the first assistant coach, while Hamza Lutalo will serve as second assistant. Mubarak Kiberu will take charge of goalkeeping duties, Frank Bumpenje has been named kit manager, and Bashir Mutyaba will act as team coordinator. This technical team will work closely with Fabian to ensure smooth preparation both on and off the pitch.
Uganda faces a tough challenge at the Total U17 Africa Cup of Nations, having been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Tanzania, as well as continental heavyweights Nigeria and Angola. The group promises intense competition, but it also presents an opportunity for the Cubs to test themselves against strong opposition and aim for progression in the tournament.
The appointment of Paa Kwesi Samuel Fabian marks a significant step forward for Uganda’s preparations. With a qualified technical team in place and a clear roadmap leading into the training camp, the Cubs will now focus on making the most of the remaining weeks before kickoff. FUFA and Ugandan football fans alike will be hoping that this late but decisive move helps the team perform competitively and represent the country with pride on the continental stage.
