Togo to Host 7th Edition of UEMOA Football Tournament
The 7th edition of the UEMOA (West African Economic and Monetary Union) football tournament was officially launched this Thursday in Lomé, with the competition set to run from November 22 to 29 in the Togolese capital.
The draw has placed the host nation Togo in Group A alongside Mali, Niger, and Ivory Coast, promising a fiercely competitive group. Group B features the defending champions Burkina Faso, as well as Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and Benin.
The tournament format is straightforward: two groups contest a round-robin league phase, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the final showdown on November 29.
This year’s tournament enjoys the sponsorship of Vivien Sylvestre Tommy, a former Togolese international goalkeeper who made his mark in the 1970s. Tommy was notable for his performances with Etoile Filante de Lomé and his participation in Togo’s inaugural African Cup of Nations campaign in 1972, held in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Despite Togo’s early exit, Tommy earned the accolade of “best goalkeeper” of the tournament. He also had stints with Stade d’Abidjan and Stella d’Abidjan before retiring in 1982.
