UEFA is taking steps to address fairness in football by proposing changes to the rules regarding player injuries caused by fouls. Led by Michel Platini, the governing body aims to introduce temporary exclusions for players responsible for injuring opponents during matches. This measure is intended to prevent penalizing the injured team by leaving them with fewer players on the field while their injured teammate receives treatment.
Pierluigi Collina, UEFA’s refereeing director, elaborated on the proposal, stating, “We are going to propose this new rule to the Board: asking the offender to leave the field as long as the injured player has not returned to play or has not been replaced.” Collina highlighted the perceived unfairness of the current system, where the player committing the foul receives a caution but remains on the pitch, potentially giving their team an advantage while the opposing team copes with temporary numerical disadvantage.
By implementing temporary exclusions for players responsible for causing injuries, UEFA aims to promote fairness and ensure that teams are not unduly disadvantaged due to fouls committed by opponents.
