Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-0 home win over Atalanta Bergamo on Tuesday night in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff tie, but the evening carried deep personal meaning for Serhou Guirassy.
The Guinean striker opened the scoring in the third minute before Maximilian Beier added a second just before halftime to seal a comfortable victory for Borussia Dortmund.
While the result placed Dortmund in a strong position ahead of the return leg, Guirassy’s celebration after his goal drew particular attention.
After finding the net early on, Guirassy lifted his jersey to reveal an undershirt carrying a heartfelt message.
“Aissata Guirassy. May he welcome her to his great paradise.”
The gesture was later explained as a tribute to his late niece, Aissata.
Speaking after the match in an interview with Prime Video, Guirassy revealed the emotional significance behind the message, noting that it was also meant to support his brother during a painful period.
“We are all standing by him, it is a very difficult time,” he said.
It was a touching moment from the Dortmund forward, whose thoughts on the night extended beyond football.
