In a thrilling UEFA Champions League group-stage encounter on Wednesday night, DR Congo midfielder Ngalayel Mukau delivered a match-winning performance, scoring both goals in Lille’s 2-1 victory over Bologna at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
The game began with early drama as Bologna thought they had taken the lead in the 5th minute through Thijs Dallinga. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review, much to the relief of Lille.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when 20-year-old Ngalayel Mukau found the back of the net in the 44th minute. His well-timed strike gave Lille a 1-0 lead heading into the break, marking a pivotal moment in the tightly contested match.
Bologna came out strong in the second half and levelled the score in the 63rd minute. Colombian defender Jhon Lucumí capitalised on a defensive lapse to restore parity, sparking celebrations from the home crowd.
But Lille responded swiftly, and just three minutes later, Mukau struck again. The DR Congo starlet showcased his skill and composure, netting his second goal of the night in the 66th minute to restore Lille’s lead. His brace not only secured the victory but also underscored his growing reputation as a rising star in European football.
Mukau’s standout performance was instrumental in Lille’s success. The midfielder played with maturity beyond his years, contributing both offensively and defensively. He was substituted in the 86th minute, receiving a well-deserved ovation as Hákon Arnar Haraldsson came on to replace him.
The win bolsters Lille’s campaign in the Champions League group stage, with Mukau’s heroics highlighting their potential to compete at the highest level.
