DR Congo forward, Silas Katompa Mvumpa played a pivotal role in Red Star Belgrade’s commanding 5-1 victory over Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
The emphatic win marked the Serbian side’s first triumph in this season’s competition and their third-ever victory in the tournament’s history.
Stuttgart started strong, with Ermedin Demirovic taking advantage of defensive lapses to open the scoring in the fifth minute. However, the joy for the visitors was short-lived as Red Star responded just six minutes later.
Silas Katompa Mvumpa, currently on loan from Stuttgart, drove through midfield and unleashed a stunning curled effort to equalize, showcasing his skill and determination against his parent club.
The hosts gained momentum and took the lead in the 31st minute when Rade Krunic ended his two-year goal drought with a clinical finish. Red Star continued their dominance in the second half, with Mirko Ivanic extending the lead in the 65th minute by heading home at the far post.
Krunic turned playmaker shortly after, setting up Nemanja Radonjic for Red Star’s fourth goal in the 69th minute. Radonjic completed the rout a minute from full-time with a precise left-footed strike.
The team’s spirited comeback and commanding display will be remembered as a standout performance in their Champions League campaign.
