The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken decisive action in the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, announcing the disqualification of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) from the remainder of the tournament. The decision, confirmed by the Arryadia channel on Wednesday, stems from a breach of player eligibility rules during the qualifying rounds.

The controversy centers on TP Mazembe defender Arsène Zola, whose age came under scrutiny following a complaint lodged by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). Morocco raised concerns after facing DR Congo in the two-legged tie, which ended 2-0 in favor of the DR Congo in the first leg and 0-1 in the second. The FRMF argued that Zola was ineligible to participate, as he was born on February 23, 1996, exceeding the age limit stipulated by CAF for the U23 competition. According to the tournament regulations, players must have been born on or after January 1, 1997.

Following a review of the complaint, CAF ruled in favor of Morocco, disqualifying DR Congo from the qualifiers. The decision grants Morocco passage to the next round, where they will face Mali for a spot in the final phase of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Egypt later this year. The two-legged final round of qualifying is set for June 5th and June 9th, with the first leg on June 5th and the return leg on June 9th.

This ruling underscores CAF’s commitment to enforcing eligibility rules strictly, particularly in youth and U23 competitions. Player age fraud has long been a point of contention in African football, affecting the integrity of tournaments and the fairness of competition. By taking a firm stance in this case, CAF sends a clear message to national federations: compliance with regulations is mandatory, and violations will have direct consequences, including disqualification.

For Morocco, the decision is a significant boost, providing a pathway to compete in the final tournament in Egypt. The North African nation will now prepare to face Mali, a formidable opponent in the next round. Both teams will be keen to secure a place in the final phase, which represents not only continental glory but also a chance to qualify for the Olympic Games, as the U23 AFCON also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Olympics.

The disqualification of DR Congo serves as a cautionary tale for other federations. CAF’s enforcement highlights the importance of diligent player registration and verification processes. Clubs and national associations must ensure that all players meet the age requirements before fielding them in any official competition. Failure to do so not only risks the team’s results but also its reputation within African football.

As the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers progress, Morocco’s focus will shift to preparation and squad selection ahead of the clash with Mali. Meanwhile, the DR Congo federation will need to reflect on the administrative lapses that led to their disqualification. The ruling also emphasizes the broader need for transparency and strict adherence to regulations in all CAF competitions, ensuring fair play and the continued development of African football.
