The final of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations is set: Ivory Coast will face hosts Egypt after both teams secured convincing semi-final victories on Tuesday.
Ivory Coast advanced past Ghana in a tense penalty shootout, while Egypt dominated South Africa 3-0 in front of their home fans. The Pharaohs struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, with the teams going into the break scoreless at 0-0.
The second half saw Egypt gain momentum. A generous penalty was awarded, which Ramadan Sobhi calmly converted to give the hosts the lead. South Africa tried to mount a comeback, but Egypt remained in control. Abdel Rahman Magdy then added two goals in quick succession, within just five minutes, sealing a comfortable 3-0 win and a spot in the final.
Egypt and Ivory Coast have now both secured qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. South Africa still has a chance to claim a place at the Olympics if they can defeat Ghana in the third-place playoff. The final promises to be an exciting showdown as the Pharaohs aim to lift the trophy on home soil against the Elephants.
