Senegal’s U20 team made a sensational start to the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup in Poland, defeating Tahiti 3-0 in their opening group-stage match. The highlight of the game came just six seconds after kickoff when Amadou Sagna opened the scoring, setting a new record for the fastest goal in U20 World Cup history. The previous record had stood for 34 years, held by Nigeria’s Monday Odiaka, who scored 14 seconds into a 1985 match against Canada.
Sagna, a striker for Cayor Foot, struck after a precise team build-up involving four passes, finishing a header from Youssouph Badji. His goal set the tone for a dominant performance, as he went on to complete a hat-trick with further goals in the 29th and 50th minutes. After the match, Sagna described the experience as “a great honor and a great joy” and credited the team for his individual success, emphasizing that the hat-trick would not have been possible without the collective effort of his teammates.
The victory provides Senegal with a strong start in Group D, putting them in a favorable position to qualify for the round of 16. The tournament’s format allows the top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, to advance to the knockout stage. A win or draw in their next match against Colombia on May 26 in Lublin would virtually secure Senegal’s progression. Colombia made headlines themselves by defeating host nation Poland 2-0 in Lodz on Thursday, underscoring the competitiveness of the group.
Senegal is one of four African representatives in the 22nd edition of the U20 World Cup, alongside Mali, South Africa, and Nigeria. The tournament opened on May 23 and will run until June 15, showcasing the continent’s emerging talent on a global stage. Senegal’s commanding victory over Tahiti and Sagna’s record-breaking performance have already marked them as one of the sides to watch, combining individual brilliance with cohesive teamwork in their quest for continental pride and global recognition.
With the opening win boosting confidence, the Senegalese squad will now turn its focus to Colombia, aiming to consolidate their position in the group and take another step toward the knockout rounds. The team’s fast start, both literally and figuratively, signals their ambition and potential to make a deep run in the competition, giving African football fans reason to be excited about the future stars on display.
