Germany Triumphs Over Nigeria in U-20 Women’s World Cup Final
Germany edged out Nigeria 1-0 after extra time to claim the Under-20 Women’s World Cup title in Canada on Sunday, continuing their impressive run in youth football.
The match, held at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, was tightly contested with both sides creating chances but struggling to find the net during regular time. Nigeria’s Super Falconets, who had defied expectations by reaching the final, missed several opportunities to take the lead, a fact their coach Peter Dedevbo lamented after the game.
“There are many strong teams in this competition who have been eliminated earlier, while Nigeria, not typically considered among the favourites, made it to the final,” Dedevbo said. “We had chances in the first half to win but failed to convert. Germany had one chance and took it. That’s football.”
The decisive moment came in the 98th minute when Germany’s 20-year-old striker Lena Petermann scored the only goal, breaking the deadlock and securing her country’s third U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
Reflecting on the loss, Dedevbo urged his players to learn from the defeat. “I will tell the girls to understand the pain of this loss. We had a golden opportunity with the chances we created in the first half, but we let it slip away.”
Meanwhile, France clinched third place with a 3-2 victory over North Korea in a thrilling playoff match.
Germany’s triumph underscores their strength in women’s youth football and sets the stage for a bright future as these young talents develop further on the international stage.
