U17 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP/AZERBAIJAN: JAPAN FOR GHANA IN THE QUARTERFINALS
Ghana secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Under-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time following a 2-0 victory over China on Sunday.
The Black Maidens and their Chinese counterparts were well aware of the stakes in this crucial match. The Africans took an assertive approach from the beginning, with Priscilla Okyere missing an opportunity in the 17th minute.
However, Fatima Alhassan capitalized on a rebound from the Asian goalkeeper, breaking the deadlock. Despite additional scoring chances, both teams entered halftime with Ghana in the lead.
The second half mirrored the first, with the Ghanaians creating opportunities but struggling to convert them.
It wasn’t until the 80th minute that the Black Maidens extended their lead. Jane Ayieyam successfully navigated a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, making it 2-0.
Having overcome China, Ghana now faces another Asian opponent in the quest for a spot in the quarter-finals. On October 5 in Baku, coach Mas-Ud Dramani’s proteges will take on Japan for a chance to advance to the semi-finals.
