U17 AFCON 2026: Algeria take giant step towards U17 World Cup after South Africa victory
Algeria moved to the brink of qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup after defeating South Africa 2-0 in their second Group D match at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
A brace from Yacine Abed secured a vital victory for the young Algerians, who now sit top of the group with four points and need only one more point from their final group-stage match to strengthen their hopes of reaching the global tournament.
The result places Algeria in a strong position heading into their decisive final fixture against Senegal in Rabat on Wednesday evening.
After opening their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Ghana, the Algerian side responded with a disciplined and efficient display against South Africa in a match that carried major consequences for qualification.
The breakthrough came shortly before half-time.
With the first half appearing to be heading towards a stalemate, Yacine Abed found the net in the 41st minute to give Algeria a deserved lead before the interval.
The goal changed the rhythm of the contest and allowed Algeria to approach the second half with greater confidence and control.
South Africa attempted to respond after the restart, but Algeria remained organised defensively and limited their opponents’ attacking opportunities.
As the match entered its final stages, Abed struck again to secure the result.
The forward completed his brace in the 85th minute, putting the outcome beyond doubt and ensuring Algeria claimed all three points in Group D.
The victory was one of the standout results of the day in the tournament and significantly improved Algeria’s chances of progressing to the quarter-finals.
It also moved the North African side closer to qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup, with quarter-final qualification automatically securing a place at the global competition.
In the other Group D fixture played simultaneously, Senegal revived their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Ghana.
Ibrahima Dione scored the only goal of the match in the 58th minute as Senegal bounced back from their opening defeat.
Despite the victory, Senegal were forced to finish the game with ten men after midfielder El-Hadji Sow received a red card in the 41st minute.
The results have created a tense situation heading into the final round of group-stage matches.
Algeria now lead the standings with four points.
South Africa and Senegal both have three points, while Ghana sit bottom of the group with one point after two matches.
With qualification still open, the final fixtures are expected to determine the fate of all four nations.
On Wednesday, Algeria will face Senegal in what could become one of the decisive matches of the group stage.
At the same time, South Africa will meet Ghana in another crucial encounter.
Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 20:00 in Rabat.
For Algeria, the equation is now simple.
Avoiding defeat against Senegal would place the team in a favourable position to continue its journey in the tournament and move closer to the World Cup.
The performance against South Africa also highlighted the growing confidence within the Algerian squad.
After conceding twice against Ghana in their opening match, the team showed greater defensive balance and composure under pressure.
Their ability to manage the game after taking the lead was one of the key differences compared with the first outing.
Yacine Abed’s display will also attract attention after the forward delivered when his team needed him most.
Scoring once before the break and again late in the game, he proved decisive in a contest where chances were limited.
The U17 Africa Cup of Nations has brought together 16 nations divided into four groups of four teams.
The top two teams in each group will qualify directly for the quarter-finals.
Those quarter-finalists will also automatically book their places at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Additional qualification opportunities remain available through play-off matches involving the third-placed teams from the groups.
That format means every point gained during the group stage carries enormous importance.
Algeria’s victory over South Africa has therefore placed the team within touching distance of a major objective, while also increasing pressure on the remaining teams in Group D ahead of the final day.
With momentum now on their side, the Algerian youngsters will head into their final group game knowing that another positive result could extend their continental campaign and open the door to the world stage.
