U17 AFCON: 10-man Senegal stun Ghana to claim first win at tournament
Senegal produced a determined performance on Sunday to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Ghana in their second group match at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite being reduced to 10 men during the encounter, the young Lions of Teranga displayed impressive discipline and resilience to hold off Ghana and claim all three points in a fiercely contested match.
The victory significantly strengthens Senegal’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages while placing Ghana under serious pressure heading into the final round of group matches.
Senegal punish Ghana after missed penalty
The match’s key moment arrived in the first half when Ghana were awarded a penalty that could have shifted the momentum in their favour.
However, the Black Starlets failed to convert the opportunity, allowing Senegal national under-17 football team to remain composed and gradually grow into the contest.
Even after going down to 10 players, Senegal continued to defend with organisation and determination while waiting for opportunities to attack on the counter.
Their persistence eventually paid off as they found the decisive goal that ultimately separated the two sides.
Senegal move closer to knockout qualification
The victory underlines Senegal’s fighting spirit and tactical maturity, especially considering the difficult circumstances they faced for much of the match.
The result puts the Senegalese side in a strong position in the group standings ahead of the final round of fixtures.
Meanwhile, Ghana national under-17 football team are now left with a must-win situation after slipping to the bottom of the group.
The Black Starlets will need to defeat South Africa national under-17 football team in their final group game to maintain hopes of reaching the next stage of the tournament.
