Jerome Opoku, the Turkey-based defender currently on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir, is eyeing more opportunities to represent Ghana after making his second appearance for the national team against Nigeria last Friday.
Hailing from London, Opoku showcased his talent during Ghana’s recent 2-1 defeat to Nigeria, despite receiving a red card during the match.
Opoku’s international debut came in a challenging 4-0 loss to the United States of America in October 2023, where he entered the game as a late replacement for Alexander Djiku.
Reflecting on his debut, Opoku admitted the difficulties he faced, saying, “The game against the USA wasn’t ideal, especially as it was my first match.
Our team performance didn’t aid me much, and I know I could have performed better. However, compared to that match, I see today’s game as a stepping stone for improvement.
I appreciate the coach’s style, which aligns with my own preference for playing football rather than resorting to long balls. Under this coach, I believe I can demonstrate the quality of my game.”
Opoku credited his improved performance against Nigeria to his position on the field, emphasizing the importance of tactical alignment for his success.
Expressing his aspirations, Opoku stated, “I aim to continue working hard and making significant contributions to the national team.
Whenever I step onto the pitch, I strive to exhibit my skills and contribute positively to the team’s success.
My goal is to earn more caps for Ghana and evolve as both an individual player and as part of the team.”
Ghana’s upcoming friendly against Uganda’s Cranes on Tuesday, March 26, at the Stade de Marrakesh, presents another opportunity for Opoku to solidify his place on the international stage and demonstrate his commitment to the Black Stars.
