The Turin Marathon, scheduled for November 16, 2012, saw an influx of athletes redirected from the canceled New York Marathon, which was affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Turin Marathon, recognized as the world’s oldest marathon (first held in 1897), is set to take place with a single lap route starting and finishing in Piazza Castello.
Several African athletes are expected to compete, with Kenyan Daniel Rono, boasting a personal best time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 58 seconds, leading the men’s field. Other notable Kenyan participants include Nicholas Kipruto Koech (2:07:23) and Jackson Kiprono Kirwa (2:10:35).
On the women’s side, Ethiopian Derbe Gordana Gobesa (2:28:52) and Kenyan Iness Chenonge will be contenders, along with Dutch runner of Kenyan origin, Hilda Kibet, who holds a personal best of 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 27 seconds. The Turin Marathon is not part of the elite running circuit but remains a significant event in the running calendar.
