Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri retires from international football after three World Cups

Ellyes Skhiri, the Tunisia international and 1. FC Koln player, has announced his retirement from international football.

Skhiri confirmed the decision in a statement on Instagram, writing: “The moment has come for me to announce the end of my international career.”

The 1. FC Koln midfielder said representing Tunisia had been a source of immense pride and honour.

“Wearing this shirt and representing my homeland was a great source of pride and honour,” he said. “The emotions, the moments of participation and all these memories will remain engraved in my memory.”

Skhiri represented Tunisia at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three World Cups, experiences he described as a lasting privilege.

“Having the opportunity to represent Tunisia in the biggest football competitions, by taking part in four editions of the Africa Cup of Nations and three World Cups, is a great privilege that will adorn my career forever,” he added.

The 29-year-old also reflected on the contrasting experiences of playing for his country, including victories and difficult defeats.

“We shared great victories and moments of joy, but we also experienced painful defeats and disappointments that will remain the most difficult and painful moments of my sporting career,” he said.

Skhiri thanked those connected with the Tunisia national team and wished them success in the future.

“My dedication, commitment and respect over all these years towards our Tunisian national team have been limitless,” he said. “I wish all my team-mates, the coaching staff and the members of the Tunisian Football Federation the very best in the future.

“I hope they all achieve great victories and bring the joy and pride that the Tunisian people deserve.”

The Tunisian Football Federation responded to the announcement with a message of thanks on its Instagram account.

“Thank you, Ellyes Skhiri, for everything,” it wrote. “Eleven years of loyalty, sacrifice and pride for the national flag. Tunisia’s eagle forever.”
