The National Arbitration Directorate has approved a request to appoint foreign referees for the upcoming Tunisian Ligue 1 derby between Étoile du Sahel and Espérance de Tunis.

The decision follows a formal appeal by Étoile Sportive du Sahel concerning the choice of match officials for the fixture scheduled next Saturday as part of the 24th round of the league season.

The club had specifically called for referees of European nationality, excluding those from Arab countries, for the high-profile encounter.

According to sources close to the process, the arbitration body agreed to the request but attached a financial condition.

Étoile du Sahel will be required to pay a fee of 50,000 dinars to secure the appointment of foreign officials for the match.

The move underlines the significance of the derby, one of the most closely followed fixtures in Tunisian football, where decisions on officiating often attract scrutiny.

By requesting referees from outside the region, Étoile du Sahel appear to be seeking neutrality and confidence in officiating standards for the encounter.

However, the decision has not been universally supported within circles close to the club.

Some voices have questioned the timing and financial implications of the request, arguing that the amount required could be better allocated to addressing existing financial challenges facing the team.

Despite those concerns, the arrangement is expected to go ahead, with preparations continuing for what is anticipated to be a decisive and closely contested match.

The fixture carries added weight given its position late in the season, with both teams aiming to secure crucial points.

The appointment of foreign referees is likely to remain a focal point in the build-up to the derby, as both clubs and supporters await confirmation of the officials who will oversee one of Tunisia’s most prominent football rivalries.
