Tunisia’s U20 national team will kick off their Africa U20 Cup of Nations campaign this Thursday afternoon with a high-stakes opening match against continental heavyweights Nigeria.
The fixture, set for 3:00 PM GMT, marks Tunisia’s first step in a tournament they entered under unexpected circumstances.
Originally missing out on qualification after finishing third in the UNAF qualifying tournament behind Morocco and Egypt last November, Tunisia were later handed a second chance when Ivory Coast withdrew as hosts.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) subsequently awarded hosting rights to Egypt, opening the door for Tunisia to take Ivory Coast’s vacated spot.
The Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) submitted a formal request to CAF in late March, citing Tunisia’s third-place finish and the new geographical context of the tournament being hosted in North Africa.
With Egypt automatically qualifying as hosts, the FTF argued that Tunisia, as the next best-placed team from the same region, had a legitimate claim to participate. CAF ultimately accepted the request, paving the way for Tunisia’s return to the continental stage.
Led by coach Abdelhay Ben Soltane, the Tunisian side now faces a significant challenge in Group B, which features Nigeria, Morocco, and Kenya.
The group has been widely described as one of the most competitive in the tournament, with Nigeria, in particular, regarded as strong contenders for the title.
Despite the tough draw, Tunisia are aiming to make a statement in their opening fixture. For Ben Soltane and his players, a strong start is crucial.
History shows that teams who begin well in major tournaments often build the momentum needed to progress deep into the competition.
“Our focus is on making sure we approach this first match with clarity and confidence,” said a member of Tunisia’s coaching staff ahead of the encounter.
“Nigeria is a strong opponent, but this team is prepared to compete.”
Tunisia’s ambitions extend well beyond the group stage. The top four teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, adding further incentive for sides to reach the semi-finals.
For Tunisia, the prospect of returning to the world stage is a powerful motivator.
Participation in this edition of the U20 AFCON also represents a valuable opportunity for Tunisia to showcase its emerging talent.
The tournament, renowned for producing future stars of African football, is expected to draw the attention of scouts and clubs from across the continent and beyond.
While Tunisia’s route to the tournament may have been unconventional, the task ahead is straightforward: deliver performances worthy of the opportunity.
Thursday’s clash with Nigeria will be the first test of whether this young side can rise to the occasion.
With pride, pressure, and World Cup qualification on the line, Tunisia’s U20s know that success starts with not missing their entry.
