Bernard Parker opens up on win over Sundowns

TS Galaxy head coach Bernard Parker has opened up on the tactical plan that inspired his side’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, a result that dented the defending champions’ title ambitions.

The former Kaizer Chiefs striker secured his first major win as a coach in style, as Galaxy stunned the Betway Premiership giants at Mbombela Stadium in a thrilling encounter.

Victor Letsoalo, Sedwyn George and Mpho Mvelase were all on target for Galaxy, while Sundowns’ Colombian forward Brayan Leon scored twice in a losing effort.

Reflecting on the result, Parker revealed that his side executed a carefully designed game plan built around discipline, counter-attacks and exploiting space behind Sundowns’ high defensive line.

“We already had an advantage because of the psychological factor we have over them,” Parker explained.

“At the same time, they were more under pressure by having to score a lot of goals and win the match… we kept discipline, took responsibility, and showed unity in defending, then hit them on the counter attack.”

Parker highlighted how his team prepared specifically for Sundowns’ attacking style, identifying spaces to exploit in transition.

“We have been practicing on how they keep a high line, so we made sure we attack the space behind,” he said.

A key part of the strategy involved using the pace and directness of attacking threat Mahlambi, who Parker singled out as a decisive factor.

“Give the ball early to him, isolate him… great one v one,” Parker added. “In the past two games he gave us penalties, and again today.”

The TS Galaxy coach concluded by praising his players for executing the plan to perfection, insisting the victory came down to organisation, unity, and playing to their strengths.

The result marks a significant early milestone in Parker’s coaching career, coming against one of Africa’s strongest sides and reshaping the momentum in the Premiership title race.
