Trump dismisses concerns over Iran’s World Cup participation after attack
Donald Trump has said he is unconcerned about Iran’s potential participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, amid speculation that the Middle Eastern nation could boycott the tournament due to regional security tensions.
Speaking to the American outlet Politico on Tuesday, Trump made it clear that Iran’s involvement in the competition does not factor into his considerations, despite the United States being one of the host nations.
“I don’t care at all about Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup. I think Iran is going to suffer a crushing defeat. They are in their final stages,” Trump was quoted as saying.
The comments follow earlier remarks by Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian Football Federation, who suggested that a boycott of the 2026 tournament could not be ruled out given the security climate in Iran and across the Gulf region.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly staged by the United States, Mexico and Canada, with matches scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19.
According to projections, Iran could find itself in a challenging group that includes Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, setting the stage for a competitive campaign should they confirm their participation.
