Troy Deeney backs Nicolas Jackson’s rise at Chelsea amid Ballon d’Or ambitions

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has voiced his belief in Nicolas Jackson’s potential to become a key figure at Chelsea, highlighting the young forward’s progress since the start of the 2024/25 season. Jackson, who joined the Blues from Villarreal, has made a strong impression in the Premier League, scoring six goals and providing three assists in just 10 matches. His promising start has led many to believe he could be a central figure in Chelsea’s future.

Speaking to TalkSport, Deeney commended the 23-year-old Senegalese international’s growth and potential, but he was measured about expectations.

I think he’s very good and he’s 23.

I think he is growing and learning,” said Deeney, as reported by Chelsea News.

Deeney sees Jackson’s development as promising but stressed that he still has areas to refine.

The former Watford captain’s comments follow recent statements by ex-Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who publicly encouraged Jackson to aim high, even suggesting he should aspire to win the Ballon d’Or one day.

Koulibaly’s remarks underscore the high expectations surrounding Jackson, who has been one of Chelsea’s standout players this season.

Deeney, while supportive of Jackson’s potential, struck a more cautious tone.

“There is still loads he could work on,” he acknowledged.

“Would I, at this moment in time, see him in a place where he could be Ballon d’Or winner? No, but I get what his teammate is talking about there.

Deeney emphasized that while the Ballon d’Or might not yet be a realistic target for Jackson, having an ambitious mindset could be essential for his progression.

Jackson’s first season with Chelsea has marked him as one of the most consistent performers in a young squad still finding its rhythm.

His contributions on the field have been integral to Chelsea’s offensive setup, bringing both creativity and a clinical edge to the team.

Jackson’s ability to adapt to the physicality and intensity of the Premier League has been evident, and he has quickly become a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge.

With a long season ahead, Jackson will have ample opportunity to refine his game under Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

His early displays have shown flashes of technical ability and composure in front of goal, but as Deeney pointed out, there remains room for growth.

Deeney highlighted that mindset plays a crucial role in a young player’s journey to elite status.

In terms of like believing it, it is the hardest part and getting after it,” he noted.

This focus on mentality aligns with Koulibaly’s encouragement for Jackson to set ambitious goals for himself, even if achieving them may take years of hard work and dedication.

As Jackson navigates his first full season in England’s top flight, Deeney’s advice serves as both encouragement and a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead.

The expectation for Jackson to succeed at Chelsea will only grow, especially with the spotlight placed on him by teammates and fans alike.

While Deeney’s assessment of Jackson’s Ballon d’Or prospects may be tempered, his belief in the player’s potential remains strong.

Chelsea’s faith in Jackson is clear, and as he continues to adapt and improve, the possibility of him becoming a key figure in the club’s future grows.

With time, the right coaching, and a focus on development, Jackson could become the kind of player who can make a mark not only in the Premier League but also on the global stage.

For now, Jackson’s focus will likely remain on continuing his strong performances and building on his early success.

If he maintains his upward trajectory, the accolades—and perhaps even the awards—could follow in the years to come.
