Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong says Nigerian football needs greater consistency and stronger leadership from the top to fully realise the country’s wealth of footballing talent.

Troost-Ekong, who has been a key figure for the Super Eagles in recent years, believes Nigeria has no shortage of talented players but needs a more coordinated approach to ensure that talent translates into sustained success.

“We are at a point where we need to see some consistency and think from the top down,” Troost-Ekong said.

“I think the talent is there in abundance.”

The defender’s comments come amid continued discussions about the direction of Nigerian football and how the country can better harness its considerable pool of young and established players.

Nigeria has traditionally been one of Africa’s leading football nations, producing generations of players who have enjoyed successful careers at major clubs in Europe and beyond.

Troost-Ekong’s assessment highlights the importance of creating greater stability across the various levels of the game, from administration and development structures to the senior national team.

For Nigeria, the challenge is not simply identifying talented players but creating an environment in which they can develop consistently and perform at international level.

The Super Eagles have regularly been among the continent’s leading sides, with three Africa Cup of Nations titles and a long history of producing high-profile players.

Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria during their run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, has become one of the senior voices within the national team setup.

His comments underline the need for a long-term approach to Nigerian football, with consistency and effective planning central to turning the country’s abundant talent into sustained success.

As Nigeria continues to develop its next generation of players, the focus will be on ensuring that the structures around those players are strong enough to maximise their potential.
