Trezeguet faces further tests after suspected hamstring injury

Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” is facing further medical examinations after suffering a suspected muscle injury while playing for Al Riyadh in the Saudi Pro League.

The Egypt international was named in the starting line-up for Al Riyadh’s sixth-round match against Al Khaleej but was forced off after being injured in the 12th minute.

According to Saudi sports newspaper Al Riyadiyah, initial tests indicated that Trezeguet had sustained an injury to the back of his thigh, commonly referred to as the hamstring area. The extent of the problem will not be known until he undergoes more detailed medical examinations.

Trezeguet went to ground during the match and called for Al Riyadh’s medical team to attend to him. After assessing the player, the club’s medical staff decided that he should leave the field to avoid aggravating the injury.

The report suggested that the 30-year-old may have played before fully recovering from an earlier muscle problem. He had already missed Al Riyadh’s match against Al Ahli Saudi FC on Friday because of a muscular injury.

No timetable has yet been given for his return, with the advanced tests expected to determine the severity of the latest issue and how long he may be unavailable.

The match between Al Riyadh and Al Khaleej ended in a goalless draw. The result left Al Riyadh with five points from six matches, placing them 12th in the Saudi Pro League. Al Khaleej are one place below them in 13th, with four points.

Trezeguet joined Al Riyadh’s starting side for the fixture despite having recently been absent because of injury. His early departure meant the club had to manage the remainder of the contest without the Egypt international, while the medical team monitored the problem.

The initial diagnosis remains provisional. Further examinations will establish whether the injury is minor or more serious, and whether Trezeguet will be able to feature in Al Riyadh’s next fixture.

For now, the immediate concern is the muscle complaint identified in the first assessment. The decision to remove him from the match was taken as a precaution, with Al Riyadh’s medical staff choosing not to risk making the injury worse.
