Mourinho Declares Chelsea’s Transfer Business Closed, Despite Ongoing Rumours
Chelsea manager José Mourinho has declared the club’s transfer business concluded for the summer, despite the transfer window remaining open until August 31st.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday, Mourinho praised the club’s efficiency in finalising deals well ahead of the deadline. “We’re done with the transfers. The market closes on August 31, but for us, it closed on July 19. My club did a fantastic job — not only in terms of who we bought, but also the record time in which it was done,” said the Portuguese tactician.
Mourinho’s comments come as something of a surprise, particularly given Chelsea’s reported interest in Real Madrid duo Sami Khedira and Raphaël Varane — both of whom have been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. The manager’s relationship with the pair, established during his time at Madrid, has fuelled speculation that Chelsea may yet look to bolster their squad before the window shuts.
Nevertheless, the West London club has already been one of the most active in the transfer market this summer. The sale of Brazilian defender David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €50 million in late May allowed Chelsea to reinvest heavily. The arrivals of Cesc Fàbregas from Barcelona, Diego Costa from Atlético Madrid, Filipe Luís, and Croatian midfielder Mario Pašalić have significantly reshaped the squad.
Costa and Fàbregas, in particular, are expected to play central roles in Mourinho’s push for the Premier League title after last season’s near miss. With these additions secured early, Mourinho appears satisfied that his team is ready to compete on all fronts in the upcoming campaign.
Chelsea’s stance also reflects a growing preference among top clubs to complete business swiftly, avoiding the late-window frenzy that can disrupt pre-season preparations.
Still, with over a month remaining in the transfer window, fans and pundits alike will watch closely to see if Chelsea truly stay inactive — particularly if a last-minute opportunity or injury forces their hand. For now, though, Mourinho insists the doors at Stamford Bridge are shut.
