Brentford are open to allowing Frank Onyeka to leave during the January transfer window as uncertainty continues to surround the Nigerian midfielder’s role at the Premier League club.
The 28-year-old has just concluded international duty with Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he featured prominently as the Super Eagles enjoyed a strong campaign.
Onyeka made four appearances during the tournament and was part of the squad that secured the bronze medal following a victory over Egypt in Saturday’s third-place play-off, bringing a positive end to his continental commitments.
With the Africa Cup of Nations now over, attention has shifted back to Onyeka’s club situation, which remains unresolved.
According to reports, Brentford are prepared to consider either a permanent transfer or a loan move for the midfielder this month, a stance that reflects both the player’s ambitions and his current standing within the squad.
Onyeka returned to Brentford this season after spending the previous campaign on loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg.
However, his reintegration into the Bees’ first-team plans has proven difficult.
Despite being available for selection, he has featured in only nine matches across all competitions and has yet to start a Premier League game this season.
That limited involvement has fuelled speculation over his future, with the player understood to be seeking more regular playing time at this stage of his career.
Brentford’s coaching staff have publicly acknowledged Onyeka’s situation. Assistant coach Keith Andrews admitted the midfielder’s frustration is understandable, given his desire to play consistently.
“I know Frank is keen to play football more regularly than he has and I completely understand that,” Andrews said.
Those comments have been interpreted as an indication that the club is willing to listen to offers that could provide Onyeka with the opportunities he feels are currently lacking.
While Brentford value his professionalism and versatility in midfield, competition for places has limited his chances to establish himself as a regular starter.
Onyeka’s performances at AFCON have nonetheless reinforced his qualities on the international stage.
His energy, discipline and tactical awareness were evident as Nigeria navigated a demanding tournament, and his contribution was part of a collective effort that saw the Super Eagles finish on the podium.
That exposure could renew interest from clubs across Europe, particularly those seeking an experienced midfielder capable of operating in high-intensity systems.
Brentford, for their part, are understood to be pragmatic about the situation.
With the player approaching the latter stages of his prime years, the club recognises the importance of aligning squad needs with individual ambitions.
Whether that leads to a loan move, as seen last season in Germany, or a permanent transfer remains to be seen.
As the January window progresses, Onyeka’s future is likely to be clarified quickly.
For now, the midfielder returns from international duty facing a pivotal moment in his club career, with both player and club weighing the best path forward amid growing interest and limited opportunities in west London.
