Michael Essien Set for AC Milan Exit Amid Turkish and MLS Interest
By BBC Sport | February 5, 2015
Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien looks poised to bring his time at AC Milan to an end, with reports suggesting a January departure is on the cards.
The 32-year-old, who has made just nine Serie A appearances this season, is attracting serious interest from clubs abroad. According to Sky Italia, Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir (Istanbul BB) have tabled a formal offer, proposing an 18-month contract for the former Chelsea star.
Essien, who joined Milan in January 2014 after an illustrious spell at Stamford Bridge, has struggled for regular playing time at the San Siro. With his contract set to expire in June, both parties appear open to an early separation.
In addition to Istanbul BB, several clubs in Major League Soccer are reportedly monitoring the situation, including FC Dallas, as the American league continues to lure veteran European talent.
It remains unclear whether Essien will be tempted by a move to Turkey or across the Atlantic. A decision is expected in the coming days as the January transfer window enters its final stretch.
A dynamic and powerful midfielder in his prime, Essien won multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea. Injuries have slowed his career in recent years, but his experience and leadership could still be a valuable asset to a number of clubs seeking depth and quality in midfield.
