Modibo Diakité Poised for Serie A Return with Sampdoria
Modibo Diakité is on the verge of making a return to Italian football, with reports indicating the Franco-Malian defender is close to finalising a move to Sampdoria.
At 27, Diakité is set for a comeback in Serie A, the league where he first made his mark during a successful spell at Lazio. According to sources, the former Lazio centre-back has already left Spain and is undergoing a medical in Genoa ahead of signing a contract with Sampdoria.
Should the deal go through, Diakité will reunite with familiar surroundings in a league where he built his reputation as a strong and physical defender. His time in Italy saw him develop into a dependable figure at the back, earning attention from several clubs across Europe.
Since leaving Lazio in January 2014, Diakité has had stints with Fiorentina and English side Sunderland, before joining Deportivo La Coruña last summer. However, his spell in Spain has been disappointing, with limited appearances and little opportunity to cement a place in the starting line-up.
A move to Sampdoria could offer a fresh start. The club, currently aiming to strengthen its defence in the second half of the season, has already made headlines with the recent arrival of Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o. Diakité’s signing would further bolster their squad depth as they push for a strong finish in the league.
For Diakité, a return to Serie A represents a chance to revive his career in familiar territory — and potentially rekindle the form that once made him a regular name in Italian football.
