Ismaëlo Ganiou in action for RC Lens

Premier League clubs and Borussia Dortmund are closely monitoring the progress of French-Ghanaian defender Ismaëlo Ganiou after the 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with RC Lens in Ligue 1.

Ganiou has emerged as one of the most sought-after young defenders in France following an impressive 2025-26 season that saw him establish himself as a key figure in Lens’ backline.

His rapid development has reportedly attracted interest from several English top-flight sides as well as German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund ahead of the summer transfer window.

From squad player to defensive mainstay

The young centre-back began the campaign on the fringes of the first team and was largely used as a substitute during the opening months of the season. However, a run of strong performances earned him a starting role in November, and he never looked back.

Once handed the opportunity, Ganiou cemented his place in the team and became one of Lens’ most reliable performers. His consistency, composure and growing leadership qualities helped him stand out in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

The defender featured in 23 Ligue 1 matches and contributed three goals, underlining his value at both ends of the pitch. While still relatively inexperienced at the highest level, he displayed maturity beyond his years and quickly developed a reputation as a calm and dependable presence in defence.

Learning from setbacks

One of the defining moments of Ganiou’s season came early in October when he was sent off during a match against Auxerre. Rather than allowing the incident to derail his progress, the youngster responded positively and used the experience as a learning opportunity.

His performances in the months that followed highlighted significant growth in decision-making and discipline. Coaches and observers noted a more measured approach to defending, with Ganiou becoming increasingly assured in one-on-one situations and more comfortable when building play from the back.

Those qualities have helped elevate his standing among Europe’s emerging defensive talents and significantly boosted his market value.

Europe takes notice

With Lens valuing the defender at around €20 million, interest in his services is beginning to intensify.

Borussia Dortmund are understood to be among the clubs keeping a close watch on his development. The Bundesliga side has a strong track record of identifying and nurturing young talent and has frequently looked to Ligue 1 for defensive reinforcements in recent years.

The German club’s recruitment strategy suggests Ganiou fits the profile of player capable of thriving at Signal Iduna Park, making him a name to watch as transfer activity gathers momentum.

Interest is not limited to Germany. Several Premier League clubs are also believed to be tracking the France youth international, with English sides possessing the financial muscle to meet Lens’ valuation if they decide to formalise their interest.

Whether he remains with Lens for another season or secures a move abroad, Ganiou’s stock continues to rise. For now, the French-Ghanaian defender appears destined to be one of the most talked-about young players in the transfer market during the months ahead.
