Tottenham’s winless start continues as Aston Villa claim 3-2 victory

Tottenham Hotspur remain without a Premier League win this season after losing 3-2 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday, 19 September 2026, with Omar Marmoush starting for the hosts.

The defeat was Tottenham’s third in their opening five league matches under Italian head coach Roberto De Zerbi, following two draws. Aston Villa, meanwhile, secured their first victory of the campaign.

Tottenham had been looking to recover after failing to win any of their first four league games. They began with defeats by Brentford and Newcastle before drawing 0-0 with Nottingham Forest and Everton. Their difficulties have also extended to the English League Cup, where they were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool.

Injury adds to Tottenham’s problems

Tottenham’s afternoon worsened in the 17th minute when right-back Pedro Porro went down with an injury. Medical staff attended to the Spain international and attempted to help him continue, but he was unable to do so.

De Zerbi made a forced substitution one minute later, bringing on Archie Gray for Porro.

Aston Villa then took the lead in first-half stoppage time. In the fourth added minute, Boubacar Kamara sent a cross into the penalty area after a mistake involving Tottenham’s defence and goalkeeper. Yohan Manzambi met the delivery with a powerful shot that found the net.

Tottenham appeared to have restored parity in the 60th minute when substitute Mohammed Kudus scored, but the goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside against Robertson.

Seven minutes later, Aston Villa doubled their advantage. Manzambi’s pass released Jackson, who evaded a Tottenham defender before sending a shot towards goal. The effort was not particularly powerful, but it deceived the home goalkeeper and finished in the net.

Aston Villa added a third in the 79th minute through Emiliano Buendia. The move followed a quick attack and a series of passes before John McGinn played the ball across the ground to Buendia, who struck a long-range effort firmly into the goal.

Tottenham end 446-minute wait for a goal

Tottenham finally scored their first Premier League goal of the season in the 86th minute, ending a run of 446 minutes without finding the net.

Mohammed Kudus supplied a low cross for Conor Gallagher, who converted to bring the hosts back into the contest. Tottenham then scored again in the eighth minute of added time, when Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke headed in a free-kick delivery from Andrew Robertson.

The late response was not enough to prevent defeat. Tottenham remain on two points and sit 18th in the Premier League table, while Aston Villa move to four points in 15th place after recording their first league win of the season.
